These super crispy air fryer potatoes with furikake are so addicting and easy to make. The crispy potatoes are tossed in furikake seasoning which elevates it to another level of umami. They are then paired with a spicy and tangy Sriracha mayo dip. Packed with finger licking goodness, this super crispy potatoes recipe is delicious as a snack and perfect as a flavorful side dish.
What you need to make air fryer potatoes
- Baby gold potatoes (or any potatoes)
- Furikake seasoning
- Avocado oil or olive oil
- Salt
Sriracha Mayo Dip
- 4 tablespoons Kewpie mayo (or regular mayonnaise)
- 1 tablespoon Sriracha hot sauce
What is furikake?
Furikake is a savory Japanese seasoning most often made of dried seaweed, sesame seeds, sugar, and salt. There are many different variations of furikake, include some that include dried fish flakes, shrimp, or even wasabi. Furikake is traditionally sprinkled on top of many dishes, such as rice, vegetables, or fish. However, more recently furikake has become very popular throughout the world and can be seen in various Asian fusion dishes.
Furikake is especially popular in Hawaiian Japanese recipes throughout the island. It’s used as a condiment in sushi bakes, rice balls, and even poke nachos! Furikake is also a popular flavor for potato or corn snacks. In fact, one of my favorite appetizers to enjoy in Hawaii was furikake fries, which inspired this crispy air fryer potato recipe!
Where can you buy furikake?
Furikake can be found pretty easily in Asian grocery stores. It’s usually located near the Japanese, seaweed, or spice aisle. As of late, I’ve also found furikake regularly in the Asian aisle in regular grocery stores, such as Wholefoods or Safeway. Trader Joe’s even came out with their own Trader Joe’s nori komi furikake! Of course, there is always Amazon that sells my favorite furikake!
How to make air fryer potatoes with furikake
- Preheat air fryer 400℉ for 5 to 10 minutes
- While air fryer is preheating, clean and cut potatoes into bite sized pieces. Gold or baby potatoes are great for this recipe so you don’t need to peel the potatoes, but you can use any type of potato you prefer.
- Place all the cleaned and cut potatoes into a large bowl. Drizzle with oil and sprinkle lightly with salt. Don’t over season as you will add more flavor with the furikake. Mix everything together.
- Place potatoes into air fryer rack. For the crispiest potatoes, don’t over crowd the rack and try to leave space between each piece. If you overfill your rack, the potatoes will steam and not get as crispy. You might have to air fry potatoes in batches depending on how big your air fryer is.
- Air fry potatoes for 10 to 15 minutes or until desired crispiness. Use tongs to flip potatoes after about 5 minutes to make sure they cook evenly.
- While potatoes are cooking, mix mayo with sriracha to make the dipping sauce. Set aside.
- Once potatoes are done cooking, place into large bowl and add in furikake seasoning. Toss well. Enjoy as a snack or as a side dish. Serve with sriracha mayo dipping sauce.
Is an air fryer worth it?
YES!! Air fryers are my all time favorite kitchen appliance. I use my air fryer almost every day and totally believe that they are worth every inch of counter space they take up. In the last five years, I had three air fryers. The first two air fryers were basket air fryers. I loved how easy they were to clean but hated how little room there was in the air fryer. This was way back before we had kids to feed so it was certainly big enough to make meals for two. However, I can’t imagine it being efficient to cook for a family of four. Keep in mind these were first generation air fryers and today’s air fryers are so much more spacious. In fact, you can even get air fryers with extra large sized baskets or even air fryers with two baskets! The latest advancements in air fryers have definitely tempted me a few times. I might even get my hands on one during Cyber Monday or Black Friday this year!
Until then, I love love love (did I say love yet?) my current Cuisinart air fryer. I looks like a toaster oven, except it can toast, air fry, broil, and bake. I’m not exaggerating when I say that I use this amazing machine almost every day, if not twice a day! It makes everything so crispy and does such a good job at cooking things evenly. I’ve done everything with it from heating up frozen chicken nuggets to air frying steak bites and even baking cookies. It’s just so convenient to cook with and is pretty easy to clean.
