A Japanese hibachi inspired garlic fried rice that’s so delicious and easy to make at home. This fried rice recipe requires only a handful of ingredients but packs so much flavor. The secret to this garlic fried rice is the homemade garlic soy butter. I love making the garlic soy butter in bulk to use for future meals such as an easy garlic soy chicken stir fry or to jazz up any vegetable dish!
What you need to make garlic fried rice with egg
- 4 cups of cooked leftover rice
- 3 eggs
- 2 green onions
- 1 small onion diced
- 1.5 – 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- homemade garlic soy butter (see below for ingredients and directions)
I always make this homemade garlic soy butter in bulk to use for other meals during the week. It’s delicious on top of grilled or pan fried vegetables, such as asparagus and green beans. This butter is also amazing as a sauce with chicken or shrimp. I’ve even enjoyed it on toasted, crusty bread and a crispy runny egg on top.
The garlic soy butter stores really well in an airtight container. Just be sure to store in the fridge for up to a week. This homemade butter is amazing with this fried rice but is amazing with just about anything you can think of!
What you need and how to make homemade garlic soy butter
- Small oven safe ramekin and foil
- 1/4 cup olive (or just enough to cover the garlic in the ramekin)
- 10 cloves of garlic
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons minced garlic
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- salt and black pepper
The first step to making this garlic soy butter is to make a roasted garlic oil. Put ten peeled cloves of garlic in a small oven safe ramekin or bowl. Cover the garlic cloves with just enough olive oil to cover each garlic clove (about 1/4 cup olive oil). Afterwards, sprinkle with salt and black pepper and cover tightly with foil. Put in the oven or toaster oven for 20-30 minutes at 375ºF. Use a fork to check that the cloves are soft and tender before taking them out of the oven.
In a new bowl, separate the roasted garlic cloves from the olive oil. Set olive oil aside to use for other recipes. Then to the roasted garlic cloves, add 2 tablespoons of fresh minced garlic, 1/2 cup of softened, unsalted butter, 2 tablespoons of lemon juice, and 2 tablespoons of soy sauce. Mix everything together until smooth. Store garlic soy butter in an airtight container in the fridge until ready to use.
How to make this egg fried rice recipe
- Prepare garlic soy butter according to instructions above and set aside 5 tablespoons of garlic soy butter.
- Use a fork to break up the old rice. It’s best to use leftover rice when cooking fried rice. If you use fresh rice, it often leads to fried rice that is mushy. You can choose any type of rice, however, jasmine or calrose are my favorite. Sometimes, I also like mixing rices for an in between texture. If you don’t have leftover rice, you can cook new rice the night before. Spread out the rice on a sheet pan and store in the fridge overnight. If you are desperate to make fried rice and are short on time, I recommend using a long grain rice and letting the cooked rice cool to room temperature before cooking the fried rice.
- Dice onions and cut green onions into small pieces.
- In a small bowl, scramble 3 eggs with 1/2 teaspoon of chicken bouillon or salt.
- In a large pan or wok, heat up 3 tablespoons of oil using medium high heat. Add in diced onions and cook until soft (about 2-3 minutes).
- Move all the cooked onions to one side of the pan and add in eggs. Cook eggs to a soft scramble then add in all the leftover rice. Lower heat to low medium. Mix everything together.
- Add in 5 tablespoons of garlic soy butter, 2 tablespoons of soy sauce, and green onions. Stir and cook until everything is mixed together and the green onions have softened (about 5 minutes). Enjoy garlic fried rice alone or topped with chili oil!
